Important Corporations Taking Another Look At Tablet PCs

Judging by the latest rumors, it could be an interesting couple of years for tablet PC fans. Whispers concerning a tablet Mac and a tablet version of the Eee PC are making the rounds, and there's more reliable information from Microsoft about multi-touch displays.

Solid, if faraway, ground seems like the best place to start. At the D: All Things Digital conference, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer sat onstage while Microsoft's corporate vice president of program management demonstrated technology that accepts more than one physical input. Such tech already exists at Apple, of course, but Microsoft hopes to spread it throughout the Windows 7 operating system.

That should put some tablets with multi-touch displays about a year and a half away. The tablet Mac - if it exists - may be released this fall. Jason D. O'Grady writes about a 12- or 13-inch device that "will run the full Mac OS X and have a slot loading SuperDrive, an 'iPhone-type' GPS chip and an Intel Core Duo processor, presumably Intel's Atom." Pricing details remain completely unknown.

Finally, to move into the even more immediate future, look for a tablet version of the Eee PC to (possibly) appear within the next week. An electronista article states that Emmanuele Silanesu, the national retail manager of Asus Australia, "says that the company is looking into a touchscreen device in a form other than 'just a clamshell' and might make its debut at the industry benchmark Computex show, which starts June 3rd."

There seem to be few certainties here, but an undeniable amount of potential.
