Update: Apple IPhone Details

New details emerge regarding the specifics of the Apple iPhone; Palm CEO says it is no threat.

After the release of the patent which Apple applied for to protect a device described as, a "cross between a mobile phone and an iPod", the existence and imminent release of iPhone is confirmed. However, Palm CEO says he won't lose sleep over the release of the Apple smart phone.

Apple's U.S. patent application was released to the public on November 30, and Palm CEO Ed Colligan has reportedly shown a generally indifferent attitude in regard to the device.

According to Mercurcy News, Colligan shrugged off the iPhone as a competitor in the smart phone industry, stating "We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone. PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in."

Colligan might want to check the figures for iPod sales, and then reconsider his statement. Apple has sold over 70 million iPods since the release of the device, and is an iconic symbol in portable media devices.

The iPhone itself would have the capabilities of an iPod and would also include a 15, 000 song MP3 player, email, and 80 hours of video all in a cellular telephone.

Zirconia, which the casing would be made of, makes it possible for iPhone be available in a range of colors, including white, black, navy blue, light blue, brown, gold, ivory, and platinum.

New information on the specifications of the device was released yesterday by Digg's Kevin Rose, who claims he has an inside source.

Rose claims that two models of the iPhone will be available in 2 GB and 4 GB capacities, at prices of $249 and $449. Also stating that the device "will have a slide out keyboard, a touch screen and two batteries (one for the MP3 player, one for the phone)."

While the actual release date and specifications have yet to be confirmed, it is highly speculated that the device will be available for purchase after the MacWorld conference in January 2007.
