The Myth, The Legend, The IPhone
It's true! Apple's application to obtain a patent, to protect a new device which they described as a combination of a mobile phone and an iPod, was made public yesterday.
Apple iPhone developed the lure of an urban legend over the past several months as speculation grew surrounding it's existence. With the application for the patent, Apple is unofficially confirming that the iPhone does exist and could be released as soon as January 2007.
Apple's application for to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, which was originally filed in August, was made public yesterday.
The patent was intended to protect the design of the casing for a wireless device, which functions as both an iPod and a mobile phone.
iPod is far and away the leader in portable music player sales, having sold over 70 million devices in the past five years.
It is speculated that Apple is attempting to cash in on the mobile phone market by using the lure of the iPod, as well as the company's sterling reputation.
The public release of the patent comes soon after Apple Computer's CEO Steve Jobs has placed an order to Taiwanese manufacturer Hon Hai Precision for 12 million iPhones, only further confirming the device's existence.
Reports say the iPhone could possibly be released after the MacWorld conference in January 2007.
The iPhone, which is speculated to cost around $300, would have the capabilities of an iPod and would also include a 15, 000 song MP3 player, email, and 80 hours of video all in a cellular telephone.
Zirconia, which the casing would be made of, makes it possible for iPhone be available in a range of colors, including white, black, navy blue, light blue, brown, gold, ivory, and platinum.
Bloomberg reports that the device is described in the application as a "tube-like'' device made of zirconia and alumina, which would be "cost effective, smaller, lighter, stronger and aesthetically more pleasing than current'' designs.
