Further Furor Over EBay Payment Services

Last week, eBay announced that it would not allow the Google Checkout service. It also declared that Nochex, another online payment service, would no longer be accepted.

This decision caused as much dismay for some as the Google Checkout ban did for others.

A British PowerSeller spoke to the Register. "It's a complete ballsup-they've really mismanaged this," said the anonymous eBay user. "It's extremely aggravating as it means a major change in the way we operate-and puts us at risk of losing our accounts."

An administrator on the Nochex Forum commented on eBay's move. "We are not aware of the reasons for this sudden change in policy. While we are disappointed with eBay's latest corporate action we would like to offer our thanks and appreciation to all of you who have used our payment services on the eBay platform over the past 6 years and we look forward to continuing to provide our payments services to all our core off eBay partners."

Comments following that post showed unhappiness among Nochex users. "It disappoints me that you are so supine over it," responded Pete Western, calling the banishment "an absolute scandal." He also asserted that there is "no viable alternative for UK sellers."

As Andrew Orlowski wrote in the Register, "eBay UK appears to have listened to tumult from traders over the weekend. A statement acknowledged the sudden policy changed had caused ‘worry and uncertainty' and vowed not delist items already listed with Nochex while giving traders until August 21 to remove Nochex as a payment option."

Despite this show of understanding, banning Google Checkout and Nochex does not seem to have won eBay any fans.
