Users of AT&T Yahoo's high-speed Internet service can make and receive voice calls as part of a new set of VoIP services that became available from the companies.

AT&T Yahoo Messenger with Voice can be used for Phone Out and Phone In services, the companies announced today. Phone Out calls inside the US and to more than 30 countries can be made for less than 2 cents per minute, a rate that makes the service very competitive with eBay's Skype. Users of Phone out can purchase prepaid cards in $10 or $25 amounts online.

Phone In offers users the opportunity to purchase a phone number in a select number of major cities, and have that number connect to them via VoIP. That service will price at $2.99 per month or $29.90 per year. Francophiles will be disappointed to learn they must be residents of Metropolitan France to subscribe and get a French number.

"AT&T Yahoo! Messenger with Voice enhances and adds value to our broadband service," said Scott Helbing, chief marketing office, AT&T Consumer. "It also underscores our commitment to lead the industry in delivering the next generation of integrated communications and entertainment services."

To improve voice quality on the service, Yahoo ditched X10 as its software provider in favor of a competing service from Global IP Sound. AOL, Google, and Skype all use Global IP Sound for voice quality software.
