About.com Goes Cable TV

Signaling the continuing convergence of television, Internet, and Web 2.0, About.com just inked an agreement with consumer product review network Expo TV. The agreement moves About.com informational consumer videos, previously only available online, to Expo TV's television and broadband network.

Expo TV's video on-demand network was recently added to the offerings of cable providers like Adelphia and Insight, reaching, says the company, some 12 million television homes.

The agreement with The New York Times-owned About.com will bring the website's how-to video content to television and Expo TV's website, to join consumers who upload review videos about products and services.

"Providing About.com's expert Video Hosts to Expo TV's on-demand audience is an exciting step forward for consumerism on television," said Daphne Kwon, chief executive officer of Expo Communications.

"Expo TV's mission of providing a smart, trusted environment for viewers to learn about and purchase the best products in a particular category will be supported by About.com's engaging, informational, how-to video content."

About.com, which garnered over 31 million unique US visitors in February, will contribute its videos as part of Expo TV's "expert buying guide" content. In that category, topics like "Shopping for a Digital Camera" and "Choosing a Cell Phone" will be among the programming.

Also, the videos will be featured in the video-on-demand arena in product categories like "House and Home, "Beauty and Health," "Travel," and other heavily researched buying categories. The agreement also includes additional marketing and cross-promotion opportunities for both companies.

"Expo TV viewers online and on TV are looking to watch informative and credible product information. Offering our commerce audience this type of relevant, high-quality information from such a trusted brand is exactly how Expo TV continues to build value for our consumer viewers," said Kwon.

About.com programming is expected to be available to Expo TV viewers later this month.

Visitors to Expo TV website can rate informational videos as "helpful" or "not helpful." They can also upload their own "videopinion" to the site about products the like or dislike.
