The Sun Also Rises On MySpace

News Corp's British tabloid The Sun will offer various online services like blogging and media sharing through a "MySun" portal powered by MySpace.

Websites, blogs, and video will be part of The Sun's online presence, the MediaGuardian reported. News Corp owns both The Sun and MySpace as parts of Rupert Murdoch's media empire.

The audience for The Sun likely offers a better fit with MySpace's younger audience. The report noted how News Corp considered the prospect of connecting the Times Online with MySpace, but ruled that out due to the older audience that visits Times Online.

Advertisers will be delighted at The Sun's unveiling of MySun. The demographic appeal of the younger audience tends to make marketers and ad agencies do Snoopy dances when the prospect of putting ads where that audience will see them in large numbers arises.

Sun Microsystems may not be too pleased with the MySun portal. The technology company has long operated a MySun portal itself, with a focus on supporting the Solaris operating system and Sun's hardware.

PaidContent.org covered the likelihood of MySpace and The Sun being tied together in an interview Rafat Ali did with Zach Leonard, Digital Media Publisher, Times Newspapers UK, two weeks ago.

Leonard cited the synergies with The Sun and MySpace, and how the music component of The Sun made it a candidate for meshing with the heavily-trafficked MySpace site. A date has not yet been set for the debut of the MySun portal.

Unless of course you are a Solaris admin, and you already have it bookmarked. Just don't expect to find the Arctic Monkeys there.
