Craigslist To Charge Fees In Select Cities

Because of apartment broker and job-list spamming, Craigslist will begin imposing a nominal fee in the New York City website area and in other large cities.

Craigslist chief executive Jim Buckmaster told the Washington Post that New York apartment brokers, especially in Manhattan, were targeting the popular free listing website, posting ads for apartments several times a day. Listings receive top billing according to how recently they're posted.

Buckmaster said the online community in New York has been requesting a fee for listings for some time to cut back on the flood identical real estate ads. Starting in March, Craigslist will charge $10 per apartment listing to combat the problem.

Citing similar problems with job listing influxes, Craigslist will charge $25 per job listings in New York and Los Angeles, and $75 for San Francisco postings. Pricing plans are also being considered for Washington, Boston, San Diego and Seattle.

The Washington Post article says that reactions are mixed within the real estate community. While some brokers wouldn't mind paying a nominal fee, others said the fee would reduce or eliminate their listings. One broker noted that the site could benefit from a search feature since listings would be dropped to the bottom of the list.
