Opera Goes Global With Mini Browser
The Opera Mini browser, complete with integrated Google search, has been released globally and will work on virtually any mobile phone capable of downloading it.
Oslo-based Opera Software announced its Opera Mini web browser is now available for low end and mid-level handsets. The utility can be downloaded for free as a WAP download or for a small fee over SMS.
The mobile phone must support Java in order to use the Opera Mini browser, the company noted. Opera Mini supports English and nine other languages; they plan to offer more language support in the future.
"With Opera Mini most people can start surfing the Web with the mobile phone they have today," says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. The company had been conducting trials of the software in Germany and its home country, and saw over a million users download the software.
Google figures in the Opera Mini browser, as the search option on the Mini's default home page. A financial arrangement between Google and Opera allows Opera to make their multi-platform PC browser available for free to users.
Earlier versions of the free version of Opera were ad-supported. An ad free version could be purchased from the company. Opera marked its tenth anniversary by giving away licenses for the free version for 24 hours, but not long afterward announced the deal with Google that removed ads permanently.
