Metcalfe Calls Linux 25-Year-Old “Clunker”
Some may not know who Dr. Bob Metcalfe is but chances are they're working with something he created, namely the Ethernet. He's got a few ideas on where things are headed and he sees video as prime player. He went on to say our current operating systems are out of date, calling Windows and Linux clunkers.
In an interview he did with Light Reading (LRTV), he talked about what he sees in the future of the Internet. He told LRTV, "I've been saying video is the next big thing for some years now and I don't consider it controversial."
Since he sees video as the driving force for the future, he went on to say many changes needed to be made in to update the Internet. The Internet needs to be updated to be able to accommodate the various forms of video that will flow.
"There'll be new operating systems required; the clunkers we have, you know Windows and Linux, are 25 years old -- they're going to need updating to adequately carry video," Metcalfe says. "What they're doing now is lame."
He also said a lot of applications will need to be updated as well. Video files coming through emails as attachments simply won't cut it anymore. New, more advanced applications need to be available.
In the end, this should serve as a wake up call for operating systems. While Microsoft is slated to have Vista coming out later this year, security problems could plague them. Linux will need overhauls on the level that Vista has done in order to keep up with changes and they will need to do it very soon if they want to keep their current positioning, particularly since, even as this is being written, more and more video content is becoming available.
