Japan’s Search For Search
Google's blockbuster business model has caught the attention of the Land of the Rising Sun. The Japanese government has formed a team tasked to develop it's own Internet search engine utilizing government, technology companies, and university talent, according to AFP.
The study group, consisting of 20 private electronics companies and universities and convened by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, will meet Friday to discuss the particulars. Companies slated to participate include Fujitsu Ltd., Hitachi Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.,NEC Corp., and NTT Corp.
Though noting that search engines have become a source of wealth, government spokesman Fumihiro Kajikawa said the purpose of developing a Japanese search engine was to develop something unique to Japan, not to compete with Google and Yahoo.
With a final report due in July 2006, the project is expected to cost tens of millions of dollars over a three to five year period beginning in 2007.
