Search Gaining On Email
On any given day, says Pew Internet and American Life, about 52% of American Internet users are sending and receiving email. And as of September, 41% of the American e-population are using search engines as part of their everyday routine.
The percentage of searchers represents about 60 million American adults, a sharp increase from Pew data in June 2004. In that study, only 30% of roughly 38 million users visited a search engine daily, signifying that not only number but percentage has rapidly increased.
Pew's data suggest that during the 15-month timeframe, search usage increased by 55%.
These numbers differ a bit from comScore data, which are derived from different methodology. According to comScore, the average daily use of search engines rose from 49.3 million users to 60.7 million users, for an increase of 23%.
Either way, the data suggest that Internet search may take over email as the primary online activity.
Email is also losing ground to instant messaging, especially among younger demographics. Another survey reported that among teens and young adults, nearly two-thirds say they send more instant messages than emails.
