Name Change For Google Print

Feeling that the name would cause confusion, the folks in charge of the Google Print program have changed the name of the program to Google Book Search.

After getting enough comments from users misunderstanding the service by thinking it would help print documents and web pages, Google decided a name change was in order to clarify the nature of the service.

"The change reflects our product's evolution. When we launched Google Print, our goal was to make it easier for users to discover books. Now that we're starting to achieve that, we think a more descriptive name will help clarify what our users can do with it: namely, search the full text of books to find ones that interest them and learn where to buy or borrow them," said Jen Grant, product marketing manager at Google.

Google Print, now Book Search, has been a controversial endeavor for Google this year. Once the method by which Google was making available every book they could find (by directly scanning the books out of five major libraries), publishers and authors cried foul, as their permission wasn't sought before scanning the works.

The Association of American Publishers and Authors' Guild have both filed suit over the project. The National Consumers League has called for a Congressional hearing about the project, citing a violation of federal law.

A public debate is scheduled for tonight at the New York Public Library, viewable via webcast.
