Blogs, Judy Miller And News Media
The recent retirement of Judith Miller from the New York Times (NYT) has been part of a political scandal that's gone past the two-year mark. While the scandal itself has dominated the headline during that time, one major part of the mix was blogs, at least in regards to Miller.
A commentary from the National Journal discusses the effects blogs have on media today, particularly in the realm of politics. They quoted research by Nexis, saying blogs are all over the national media. The NYT used blogs in almost 500 stories, the Washington Post had 430 and the Los Angeles Times barely missed 340.
Lots of other stories are getting blogs included as part of their resources and it's not likely to end. One of the big debates over blogs has been moving them into the mainstream. Some blogs used for news, like the political ones, get hundreds of thousands of hits every day. It's a good place to check the pulses and buzz, regardless of the topic. Whether it's tech, politics, entertainment or something else, chances are blogs have the info and mainstream media is recognizing that.
