School Settles With Student Over Web Site
Kids are fighting authority and winning. In a recent case in New Jersey, a school district will pay out $117,500 to a student they punished for putting up his own website critical of the school district.
The suit stems from a decision by a federal judge saying school administrators violated Ryan Dwyer's free speech rights.
The AP quoted Dwyer, "While my parents and I are happy the case is resolved, most importantly, I'm hopeful this will help ensure that free speech rights of students aren't trampled on again in the future."
This suit could set some precedence for another case involving a parochial school banning blogs from students. While the school is private, this may encourage the student involved to file their own lawsuit.
This may also set some guidelines for what is acceptable in the commentary. Recently, lawsuits have been filed against bloggers for detrimental comments made by anonymous commenters. Certain companies considered this libelous and sued. It's unclear whether a case like this could play any part in the decision for this case.
