Apple Dangles A Vingle
Apple has applied to trademark the term Vingle, with applications to grant it extremely broad protection under three categories.
Does video plus single equal Vingle? IP Media Monitor thinks so, as it cites trademark filings for the term being made by Apple just before Steve Jobs announced the video iPod.
Apple is hedging its bets with its three trademark filings, as noted by AppleInsider last week. One filing focuses on the electronic transmission of streamed and downloadable multimedia content. That would cover the video business Apple has entered via iTunes 6.
The second filing hints at an audio entertainment service that could be available at Apple retail stores and points of presence it has in big-box elecronics retailers. Such a service might offer walk-up downloads of content to iPod devices.
In its third filing, Apple covers pretty much everything associated with technology, including "user manuals sold as a unit with the aforementioned goods." Since Apple has been known to complain when web sites use the term iPod in their domain names, Vingle probably will be just as off limits.
Vingles themselves could cost Apple and content partners like Disney a bit more than anticipated. Several Hollywood unions have voiced their concerns about being compensated in accordance with standing agreements.
