Parsons Blasts AOL Rumors
During a visit to Hong Kong, Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons dismissed rampant speculation about selling a piece of AOL.
"It's market rumors, and I can't curb market rumors," Parsons told a luncheon audience in Hong Kong; Reuters noted he declined to comment further on the AOL topic. He was in Hong Kong as part of a visit to China that could see Time Warner expand operations there.
All the chatter about companies like Microsoft and a Google-Comcast team-up has been reported in places like the Wall Street Journal and others. The Journal stories have cited sources close to both the Microsoft and Google talks with AOL. None of the companies rumored to be suitors have commented.
It has been acknowledged that Time Warner and Microsoft did talk about a possible joint venture earlier in the year. Technical and control issues could not be resolved and those discussions ended.
Earlier today, WebProNews suggested the entry of Google and Comcast into the discussion would prompt Time Warner to suggest the rumored $5 billion price tag for a stake in AOL just increased. Parsons' comment in Hong Kong may just be what we expected to see.
Stay tuned for the next episode, where we anticipate Microsoft will increase its bid.
