Intel Goes Municipal With Digital Communities
The chipmaking colossus wants to help cities from Philadelphia to Taipei develop wireless networks.
From the heart of rock and roll in Cleveland to the beachfronts of Corpus Christi, and beyond the US, Intel wants to help rollout wireless initiatives in 13 pilot communities.
The Digital Communities initiative will help demonstrate how wireless can better improve the efficiency of government services. Productivity gains, for example, could be realized by improved collection of utility meter data.
Intel also slipped in a note that may perk up ears in the privacy community. In its press release, they note how the initiative can enhance "resource management of first responders by remotely monitoring vehicle location."
"We are working closely with these communities to help them take the next step and harness the benefits of wireless technology. The benefits include lower cost of operations, enhanced public safety and security, and a foundation for growth and competitiveness," said Anand Chandrasekher, vice president and director, Intel Sales and Marketing Group, in the release.
Philadelphia has been noteworthy in its push to bring wireless to the city. Those behind the initiative have come under fire from those likely associated with entrenched cable and telecom providers in criticizing the city's efforts. But like twelve other places from Dusseldorf to Osaka, the city of cheessteaks and Rocky will give it a try with Intel's help.
