Microsoft Client Protection will fight spyware, viruses, and other threats to the Windows operating system.

Windows XP delivered a firewall to user machines, and a better method of performing automatic updates of the operating system. Now Microsoft wants to grab a bit of the security market as well. Company CEO Steve Ballmer announced Microsoft Client Protection at a conference in Munich, Germany.

The product will help protect desktops, laptops, and file servers from the typical array of threats to data and functionality. Though many rival products exist that protect against viruses and spyware, Microsoft said in a statement that business customers want a single solution to the myriad security problems.

To prepare this solution, Microsoft purchased relevant products. Microsoft has had a beta version of its anti-spyware product available this year since acquiring GIANT AntiSpyware. Microsoft also purchased Sybari, a security company that makes antivirus and anti-spam products, in June.

These products will be integrated into the Client Protection release. A beta version will be available to certain clients later in 2005, with pricing and licensing to be announced at a later date.
