Internet Ad Spending In The U.K. Up 62%
U.K. online ads posted some impressive numbers in the first half of the year, hitting nearly half a billion pounds or $861 million. More is spent on Internet advertising than outdoor advertising in the U.K. according to reports.
The Internet Advertising Bureau, quoting recent figures from PricewaterhouseCoopers and the World Advertising Research Center said online revenues increased 62.3% on a like-for-like basis when compared to the same period in 2004.
Guy Phillipson, Chief Executive of the IAB said: "These results have surpassed our expectations. At the end of 2004 the IAB predicted online would overtake outdoor by mid 2006 and we've beaten this target. Now the internet looks certain to be a £1 billion medium in 2005.
Phillipson suggested one of the biggest single factors was the proliferation of broadband technology for the extraordinary numbers. "Broadband is experiencing record take up this year, which has fuelled internet consumption and in turn attracted a greater share of advertisers' spend. Marketers are recognising the internet's full potential and are actively diverting budgets into online advertising."
Bloomberg pointed out in an article the numbers also surpassed radio advertising, which hit 3.6%. They also pointed out online advertising in the U.S was up 26% to 5.8 billion in the first six months from the same period in '04. Google, one of the big advertising dogs cleared $1.38 billion in the second quarter and Yahoo made $1.25 billion.
