Cisco Updates Communications Tools
The networking company will make new tools for Web conferencing and other communication needs available by late 2005.
Networking giant Cisco becomes the latest firm to position new products for the mid-sized business market. The company has announced its Business Communications Solution for mid-market companies, and firms will be able to choose from several components to use in their enterprises.
A Web conferencing tool called MeetingPlace Express lets a number of people meet online, using just a phone and a Web browser. Cnet News reports that Cisco will incorporate Macromedia's Breeze technology into this product.
Another product, Mobile Connect, lets existing users of Cisco's CallManager tie all of an employee's phone numbers to one VoIP phone number. That means one number could reach an employee at their desk, their home, or on their mobile handset. One benefit would be that calls started on the mobile phone could be switched to a work phone upon arriving at the office.
Cisco will also place a voice-messaging tool, Unity Connection, in its portfolio. That tool will be a browser based system for managing call routing rules, call screening, and message notification options. The tool also supports speech recognition, to allow for hands-free navigation of the system by callers.
