Cops Recover Missing UC Berkeley Laptop
A mystery, a cross-country journey, and eBay's role as humble intermediary all factored in the saga of a missing university laptop.
The six-month long case of the vanishing Berkeley laptop, containing the details on 98,000 people including names, Social Security numbers, and personal information, has ended with recovery of the machine and a San Francisco man's arrest.
Mercury News identified 18-year-old Shuki Alburati as being charged with one count of misdemeanor possession of stolen property. Their report alleges Mr. Alburati purchased the laptop from a woman for about $300. The woman remains a complete mystery.
Evidently Mr. Alburati didn't see any problem with buying a brand new laptop from a woman for an incredibly low price. He definitely didn't have a problem selling it via eBay to a South Carolina buyer for $1,600.
Unfortunately for the unwitting buyer, who contacted the machine's maker, IBM, for technical support, the laptop was quickly identified as stolen. Authorities do not know if the personal Berkeley student, alumni, and applicant details were accessed, as the machine's hard drive has been reformatted.
