Microsoft Pumps Up Atlas At PDC
At its Los Angeles conference, Microsoft talked more about its Atlas Web development technologies.
Fans of Ajax, the latest version of remote scripting technology, will recognize the client-side technology Microsoft discussed today at PDC 2005. The Atlas client script libraries allow developers to build more dynamic web applications.
Microsoft noted the major point about Atlas on the ASP.net beta site:
"Atlas" enables you to develop Web applications that can update data on a Web page by making direct calls to a Web server - without needing to round trip the page.
The Start.com web site appears to utilize Atlas, but the developers have been a bit coy about the technology beyond mentioning DHTML and Javascript on their blog. It is mentioned on the MSN Developer site that Ajax is used on Start.com, though.
As described by Microsoft, Atlas will provide client-side libraries to "support object-oriented development, cross-browser compatibility, asynchronous calls to Web services, and behaviors and components for creating a full-featured UI."
