Ka-ching! Online Retail Sales Hit $21.1 Billion
The Census Bureau of the US Commerce Department said those second quarter sales rose 7.2 percent over the first quarter.
Many retailers have made the move online over the past decade. Web services have become more sophisticated, as have the opportunities for selling more effectively to customers.
From heavy SEO initiatives to free shipping and cross-selling, the online marketplace has become a vital and active business center, especially during the holiday seasons. But growth outside the holidays has been strong, too.
E-commerce sales for the second quarter were 26 percent higher than the second quarter of 2004, according to the latest government figures.
That $21.1 billion figure was 2.2 percent of the $940 billion in total retail sales made during the second quarter. Sales are adjusted for seasonal variations and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, according to the report.
