MSNBC.com Still Tops In Online News
Nielsen//NetRatings in the Current Events and Global News category show MSNBC.com as number one for July.
The online news portal has dispatched a press release, showing how it has maintained its lead over rival sites despite their efforts to expand online video offerings.
In the release, MSNBC.com cited Nielsen//NetRatings numbers, showing they had 23.6 million unique visitors in July 2005. Much of that traffic was driven by demand for videos of the aftermath of the London bombings and the successful launch of the space shuttle Discovery.
MSNBC.com states it has seen tremendous growth in video demand online. July of 2004 saw less than 20 million videos played, according to its statement, while recent months have seen as many as 45 million plays.
Online news video has become a much bigger piece of the strategy for capturing more users and keeping them at news sites. Broadband penetration into more households has driven the demand. And sites have worked hard to make video playback as easy as possible for the consumer.
While the television won't be disappearing from homes in favor of the PC in the near future, TV news viewership has been dropping in favor of online coverage. The Internet offers more immediacy for users. Sites like CNN.com and CBSNews.com among others have been aggressively expanding their video selections for those visitors in recent months.
