Nokia Fixing Mobile Convergence
Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) is the integration of wired and wireless telecom systems.
Nokia will work with a number of vendors as it strives to extend its mobile product offerings. Agreements with IBM, OnRelay, Avaya, and Cisco will lead to better integration of wireless handsets with wired voice systems.
An example given by Nokia's general manager for enterprise voice solutions would be a person having one business number and one voice mail, available either in the office at a wired phone, or when the person is on the road with a wireless device.
All of Nokia's partnerships on convergence have the same focus: an integration of wireless technology into a wired world. In some instances it will be with PBX, in others VoIP. But all of them will involve Nokia products.
While the technology side of the agreements varies from vendor to vendor, convergence has the same effect. It keeps business people connected to their business in a simplified way.
But the integration will allow for more than just voice communication. Data will be a big part of the solution too. Supply chain management will likely see a boost, as widespread distributors can wirelessly update inventory information to a supplier while in the field.
