Cisco Takes On DDoS With New Protection Solution

The ubiquitous networking company makes an announcement at Chicago's Supercomm 2005 Convention today about stopping Distributed Denial of Service attacks.

A DDoS attack can bring down a site or even a whole network. The potential for DDoS and other problems has become so great that the CIA recently conducted a three-day electronic war game to determine US capabilities in the face of an online assault.

DDoS was once the purview of hackers using pre-existing scripts to attack sites. But now, criminals have entered the computer realm and could potentially use DDoS to cripple a business or extort money from one.

DDoS attacks against host systems or network infrastructure result in the disruption of service to customers and users. These attacks may limit the ability to access servers and other critical network resources.

Unchecked, they can completely block legitimate network traffic flows, saturating available bandwidth with excessive packet flooding.

Cisco's DDoS Protection Solution aims to detect malicious traffic, filter it out of a network, and still allow legitimate traffic to pass unhindered.

The company sees service providers and hosting providers as potential customers for the new solution. By scrubbing traffic of potential DDoS threats before they hit business customers, those providers can point to that action as a selling point.
