Microsoft IIS7 Details Spreading Online
The newest webserver from Microsoft won't be available until Longhorn launches in about 18 months.
Taking several pages from the Apache handbook, Microsoft will make features available for IIS7 in a modular format.
By moving core features into optional modules, once that will probably snap-in to Microsoft's Management Console, the software company should make the next release of its webserver more secure by default.
Details about the various features have begun reaching the Internet via blogs. Technology professionals who have had private access to the new webserver seem to have permission to talk about it now.
The most significant detail will be the integration of ASP.NET into the platform, instead of being implemented as an ISAPI extension. For sites running ASP.NET, configuration for both ASP.NET and IIS can be done in one place.
Users requiring additional functionality will be able to write handlers or modules in IIS7 to provide them. Expect to see a number of modules written by third-parties after IIS7 reaches the marketplace.
