Hungry For The Web? Dig Into RSS
The Canadian Press brings us another overview of RSS for the uninitiated. How many more of these articles do we need? As many as it takes to explain RSS in clear and simple terms…simple enough that it becomes mainstream.
The marketing folks were clearly not in the room when RSS was named. Amy Gahran at Contentious held a contest to rename the technology and, more importantly, to prove a point. The winner, Web feed, is much more descriptive than our favorite acronym.
In all seriousness, I'm willing to bet that a confusing name is slowing down RSS adoption rates. At the other end of the spectrum we have RSS fanatics passionately evangelizing the benefits of the technology (myself included). I'm afraid this doesn't always help clear things up.
Passion is good. Pragmatism is better. A no nonsense description is best.
RSS won't slice, dice and julienne fries. And it's not cleaning my oven as you read this. RSS does make it easier for me to organize and track a lot of information from the Internet, including blogs, Web sites and search engines.
Once I can explain this to my four-year-old I will have THE definition.
