Samsung Calls For LCD Screen Size Standard
The president of Samsung's Electronics LCD Business says manufacturers need to agree upon large TV sizes.
According to the Korea Times, Lee Sang-wan said LCD makers should standardize on products with diagonal measurements of 40, 46, 52, and 57 inches.
Speaking at the Society for Information Display event in Boston, Mr. Lee said this move would save on equipment development and product costs.
Samsung's is working on what would be eighth and ninth generation LCD production lines. The ninth-generation line would allow for cutting out six 57-inch, eight 52-inch and 12 40-inch panels from a single substrate without any leftover.
The industry, including Samsung rival LG.Philips, now produce on seventh generation lines. Those lines were developed on the assumption 40 and 46 inch screens would become a standard. LG.Philips's facility assumes 42 and 46 inch screen standards instead.
Mr. Lee did not say when the newest production lines would be available, as the LCD industry has just begun launching seventh-generation lines.
