The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, birthplace of what would lead to the Internet, requests development of an advanced programmable computing system.

The system, which would be based on a powerful computer chip, will be the focus of a $27.6 million USD contract awarded to Raytheon.

The Morphable Networked Micro-Architecture (MONARCH) project would develop a system that can switch between front-end streaming and back-end threaded processing; it would utilize IBM's Cu-08 90-nanometer technology.

"In the past, a bank of processor boards accepted information and another bank processed it," Jack Kelble, president of Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems, said.

"Now a tiny but highly sophisticated device a fraction of the size will perform both functions with unprecedented speed, power and capacity to store and process a vast amount of data."

The MONARCH device will reduce significantly the number and types of processors required for computing systems. DARPA has not disclosed future uses for MONARCH at this time.
