US Justice Department To Launch Sex Offender Registry Website
Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announced Friday that the US Justice Department plans to launch a national sex offender registry website.
Expected to be available within the next two months, 20 states are already on board. The website would allow visitors to search state sex offender databases. Gonzales espoused a goal to have 48 states represented by the fall.
"With this technology, every citizen and law enforcement officer will be able to search the latest information for the identity and location of known sex offenders," he said.
By entering a ZIP code, county, and other factors, and citizens will be able to search for registered offenders.
According to the Justice Department, the registry is cost-effective and efficient because it would be using existing data, submitted and maintained by participating states.
Employers will not be able to screen job applicants through the registry as this would violate FBI privacy policies.
