JDS Uniphase Sights In On Acterna
The global optical communications powerhouse adds to its holdings by acquiring the Germantown, MD-based Acterna.
Acterna, considered a leader in broadband and optical test and management systems, goes for $760 million in a cash and stock deal.
"Broadband and optical solutions are foundational to the growth of IP-based residential and business services," said Kevin Kennedy, president and CEO of JDS Uniphase. "We believe that vendors with a broad portfolio of vertically integrated broadband and optical solutions are best equipped to succeed in this market.
"With the addition of Acterna, we believe our combined portfolio and global sales channel will improve our ability to serve our customers as they deploy next generation IP services."
The acquisition should help JDS return to profitability. Favorable revenue and earnings figures on Acterna should begin boosting JDS and stimulate a stock that has been stuck around $1.57 per share.
