EU Collectors Shaking Down Microsoft

The software and game console giant has agreed to get competition issues resolved with the EU by the end of May.

Should the company not reach an agreement by the deadline, Microsoft may be seeing $5 million USD fines per day for failing to comply with EU sanctions.

Previously, the European Competition Commission fined Microsoft $655 million USD last March for anti-competitive practices.

That decision required Microsoft to sell its Windows operating system without the Windows Media Player, and to open up APIs so other server makers could make products interoperable with Windows products.

"We made a deal that before the end of the month we would reach an agreement. We are waiting for the Microsoft people to do their homework," European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a Reuters report.

Microsoft has not yet complied with the remedies set down by the Commission, risking another Commission finding of non-compliance and even more fines.
