Napster, Real, Yahoo Music…And Microsoft Too
It's only buzz and speculation at this point, but BusinessWeek claims to have learned another subscription service may be in the works.
After Yahoo lowered the bar on digital music subscriptions with a new, low-cost service, wrecking the stock prices of Napster and Real in the process, another familiar name in technology may join the fun too.
BusinessWeek magazine says the Redmondians are biding their time, and will launch their own low-cost music service in competition with the other three companies.
"When you see us move into the space," says Rob Bennett, senior director of MSN Entertainment, "you'll see us try very similar things."
iTunes won't be any more affected by Microsoft than they were by Yahoo. As a music store selling downloads, their sales model is different than that of the subscription services.
