Low-funded Schools Eager For Eiger
In response to school systems and businesses whose budgets are low for new computer labs, Microsoft is preparing a new Windows-based OS designed for older machines.
Operating systems like Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT are still widely used on older machines, but Microsoft has since stopped servicing these systems with security patches.
Code-named Eiger, the software will be very Windows XP-esque and will be equipped with Service Pack 2.
Eiger will run a limited list of programs from the desktop, however. These include Internet Explorer, Windows Media Center, and firewall and antivirus software. Most other programs will run from a central server.
Microsoft hasn't yet released cost and launch information.
