Gamers Can Get Paid To Play
Planetwide Games takes a page from e-Rewards playbook in offering incentives to its subscribers.
Players of the roleplaying game RYL: Path of the Emperor pay for their subscriptions. But Planetwide has a patent-pending process that will pay players.
An option to take online surveys that pay toward the subscription fee will be offered when players purchase the game. By completing the surveys, the player's account will be credited, and when funds exceed the monthly subscription, they can take the cash.
Though the company touts this model as an industry first, it is very similar to the process by which e-Rewards subscribers earn credit toward a limited number of deals. By completing surveys, an account is credited a certain dollar amount.
Reaching the $25 or $50 level enables the e-Rewards user to redeem that amount toward Blockbuster rentals or Hilton HHonors points. But the user can't take the cash.
In addition to the potential cash for survey payout, Planetwide will provide a $1 million USD prize to the winner of its RYL: Path of the Emperor tournament. It pits player versus player and will run from July 1, 2005 to April 30, 2006.
The finals will coincide with next year's E3 Video Game Expo.
