EMC Envisions Invista Virtualization
The product sounds groovy, but it's all business as the storage and management company debuts a new storage solution.
EMC calls it "network storage virtualization" in a press release, and it means data can be stored across the various physical enterprise devices in a virtual volume. If a physical device fails, it can be replaced without disrupting the virtual volume, or the various ongoing work processes in a business.
Storage administrators can centrally manage these volumes across a network, which EMC claims will take less time. This management can be performed as an ongoing task, instead of needing to wait to perform management tasks out of hours to avoid application disruption.
Businesses can create copies of data for various backup or warehousing purposes. That function should be useful to enterprises if they should be subject to a process like a SOX audit. The auditors can have information collected without bringing work to a halt.
List pricing for an Invista configuration that can virtualize up to 64 terabytes of data is $225,000 USD. All hardware and software would be included. Switch support for Cisco and Brocade is in place, with McDATA support expected early next year.
