Canadian Software Piracy Increasing
Across the border, US interests will be shouting "we told you so" in the wake of Canada's rejection of DMCA-like legislation.
A Canadian study of software piracy finds the kind of losses only a Captain Jack Sparrow could love. The study by the Canadian Alliance Against Software Theft claims a $1.1 billion loss in retail sales due to piracy.
The study, performed by research firm IDC, was released jointly by the CAAST and the Business Software Alliance. They claim global piracy losses totaled $33 billion USD last year.
"Piracy is still most prevalent in countries and regions where the software market is growing as personal computing becomes more integral to work and daily life," said John Gantz, chief research officer at IDC.
The US piracy rate was 21% while Canada's rate was 36% last year. IDC conducted over 7,000 interviews in 23 countries to carry out the study and its analysts in over 50 countries reviewed local market conditions.
In light of a global population of over 6 billion people, it would be interesting to learn more about how IDC justifies the figures it gets from such a minuscule sampling.
