IBM And Red Hat Want To Convert Solaris Users
A new initiative by the two companies seeks to replace Solaris with Linux in the hearts and minds of users.
The IBM system and technology group will offer free migration assessments to Solaris shops interested in learning more about the price and benefit of moving to Linux, according to a Computerworld report.
Engineers who were part of IBM's acquisition of Sector7 USA would perform assessments. That company had an application porting services division before being acquired.
According to a press release, IBM has completed more than 500 HP/UX and Solaris-to-AIX customer migration engagements since early 2004. These efforts will now focus on moving Solaris customers to Linux.
IBM also announced today that another wave of 22 financial services ISVs have committed to porting 48 Solaris applications to Linux on IBM's eServer platform since last year, of which 33 are already available as of today.
Sun has been attacking Red Hat, going so far as to say the company's distribution had forked from the Linux tree. Sun has been promoting Solaris on devices powered by Opteron chips from AMD, as a cost-saving alternative to IBM's servers.
IBM's appeal could come from its application space, where it has Linux versions of Lotus, DB2, Rational, Tivoli, and other packages available. And all that depreciated Sun hardware companies may have would be a selling opportunity for IBM sales of its various server series.
