Hill Bets On A New Acquisition
UK bookmaker William Hill will acquire betting shops from rival Stanley Leisure in its attempt to overtake Ladbrokes.
The acquisition, which will require regulatory approval, would make William Hill the biggest bookmaker in Britain. According to a Manchester Online report, the deal would give William Hill the chance to expand into the northwest of England as well as throughout Ireland.
The deal is valued at $930 million USD, and gives Hill 2237 street outlets, over a hundred more than Ladbrokes has now. Though Hill cites a highly competitive betting market, there is a chance the deal will come under review by competition authorities, delaying the process.
One facet of William Hill's operation, online betting, has yet to come to the United States. Lawmakers in America along with various conservative special interests have been bitterly opposed to any form of online gambling. The British firm and other like it seem to have found a way to make it work, though.
