E3 Begins Today In Los Angeles
The Electronic Entertainment Expo expects heavy turnout and console news from Sony and Nintendo.
Microsoft got a head start on the party, paying $500,000 for a 30-minute spot on MTV hosted by Elijah Wood debuting its next generation console, the Xbox 360.
Meanwhile, Nintendo will likely announce its Revolution console won't be available until later in 2006. Sony's new machine probably won't debut until then as well.
But the best rumor so far involves console market leader Sony and computer and software maker Apple. Suggestions have been made, but not yet verified, that the PlayStation 3 will be compatible with Apple's iconic iPod music player and its iTunes music store.
Among game makers, acquisitions have been happening frequently, as the cost of producing a new game title has started to move past $10 million USD into the $15 to $20 million range, a price few small companies can afford.
The continued costs of development have a chance to put new game titles above the $50 mark. A higher price will have a little effect on gaming's target market of young males.
But a price above $50 probably won't send the majority of them to the sidelines while waiting for used versions to come to their local GameStop.
