CNN Online Video To Be Free
Starting June 20th, the existing video feeds available from the news network will be more prominently displayed on its web site.
In an AP story, CNN.com will move its existing video service from a subscription-based one to simply free, as it develops a new premium online video service.
As part of the change to a free service, the video feeds will be made available in Windows Media format instead of RealNetworks RealMedia. A CNN.com executive stated the partnership with RealNetworks may continue as the premium service develops.
Susan Grant, executive vice president for CNN web media unit, stated a combination of decreasing costs in delivering video and a growing Internet advertising market will allow for the free service.
Smaller cable rival MSNBC offers free video via its web site now, while ABC charges for on-demand video.
Only a couple of details about the new premium service, like multiple live video feeds and access to the network's video archives, have been released.
