Xbox 360 Debuts On MTV
After several weeks of purported leaks and massive buzz and speculation, Microsoft's 30 minute product debut thrilled gamers.
And some analysts were impressed too.
In a special preview for analysts and media, attendees got a view of the graphics capabilities of the new gaming console. One demo showed young NBA superstar LeBron James taking his game to the street.
"Honest to goodness it was almost as good as video," said Van Baker, vice president and research director for Gartner Inc, in an AP story.
The rumored three processors were confirmed during the MTV show; each IBM PowerPC processor runs at 3.2 Ghz. That power will allow the console to handle high-definition games for HDTVs.
The Xbox 360 will be in US stores around Thanksgiving, and in Europe and Asia by the end of 2005. Pricing has not been announced yet for the new console.
Microsoft expects to see 200 new Xbox titles on the market by year's end, but they did not say what percentage would be titles for each version of the Xbox. Another point not addressed was if current Xbox titles would play on the new console.
The Xbox Live service will be key to Microsoft finally making a profit on the Xbox. Currently the company loses money on each console produced. A steady stream of online gaming subscription revenue would help offset those losses.
