Go Backstage With The BBC
A beta service rolled out by the British Broadcasting Company allows users to repurpose its content in a variety of ways.
"Use our stuff to build your stuff," says the frontpage of Backstage.BBC.co.uk. The service will serve as a network for developers.
On the site, the company has provided several news feeds for developer use. Two APIs in development will enable searching and geographic location queries.
The Invision Power Board demonstrates a use for the feeds, in this case to populate a discussion forum with topics based on BBC news stories.
Another prototype connects directly with the nascent podcasting movement. It is a Rebotocast of the BBC World news feed, where the feed gets processed by a speech synthesizer and rendered into audio.
The BBC actively solicits new prototypes and new ideas for the Backstage service via its web site. They do not currently have a calendar of API releases or a list beyond the two APIs mentioned, though they do link to several repositories of APIs on the Web.
