IPod Success Won’t Last
Bill Gates tells the German media that Apple and its iconic music player should be ready to take a fall.
"As good as Apple may be, I don't believe the success of the iPod is sustainable in the long run," Mr. Gates said in an interview published in Thursday's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
Microsoft's chairman went on to note Apple's early dominance in personal computing and graphical user interfaces, only to lose those positions later. Fans of OS X and its Aqua interface will likely disagree with the claim about GUIs.
But they may find it harder to argue with the Chief Software Architect on the iPod topic. Several cellphone manufacturers, buoyed by the debut of miniature disk drives, have begun implementing them. Samsung and Toshiba both have 4 GB drives in development.
Drives with that capacity can hold hundreds of images or thousands of songs. Give consumers a choice of carrying two devices or just one, and many will opt for the latter.
Now add a camera to the mix. Will consumers, especially the highly sought-after younger demographics, be more inclined to carry a camera phone with digital music playback? Or will they tote an iPod, a Canon Powershot, and a cellphone?
Mr. Gates may be on to something.
