Novell Gains, Loses With Linux
The former president of SuSE leaves the firm, and the company makes a Linux security acquisition.
Richard Seibt, former president of SuSE Linux who became Novell's president of the Europe, Middle East, and Asia division of the company, has resigned.
Novell acquired SuSE early last year, and Mr. Seibt was a strong Linux advocate. A reason for his departure was not disclosed.
The other two executives who left, Chris Stone and Alan Nugent, were also known as Linux evangelists within the Orem-based firm. The company, however, says its commitment to open-source projects and Linux integration at the firm was strong and had not changed.
A recent acquisition seems to bear that out. Novell purchased Immunix, makers of the AppArmor Linux application security system.
The new addition to Novell's product line protects the Linux operating system as well as running applications from internal or external threats. One might wonder how AppArmor compares with running an application on OpenBSD in a chroot jail.
"Businesses understand attacks on their mission-critical applications can hit their bottom line unexpectedly and with grave results," said Novell chairman and CEO Jack Messman as he justified the Immunix acquisition.
