New Microsoft Mobile OS Debuts Today
Chief Software Architect Bill Gates should announce details about the new operating system at the Mobile and Embedded DevCon in Las Vegas today.
The new OS, codename Magneto, should be a component of Mr. Gates' keynote address to the M&EDC gathering today.
Microsoft sought to stifle leaked details about the new Windows Mobile OS when they were posted on several web sites. While a couple of sites complied with requests to take down the details, one site refused.
Engadget.com, said its information came not from the leak, but from other web sites. It displayed screenshots and details about the new operating system.
One detail discussed a new interface, capable of being navigated one-handed like the latest Palm OS. Another listed support for a new version of Windows Media Player 10.
For devotees of the Office suite of applications, improved versions of Word and Excel, and a portable version of PowerPoint, will be in Magneto. And the pocket version of Internet Explorer will support zones, a feature that lets user classify web sites into categories from fully trusted to restricted.
