Microsoft Extends Reprieve To Pirates
Owners of pirated copies of Windows XP have an opportunity to trade it for a free licensed version.
Software piracy costs makers millions of dollars each year. While recent initiatives have been aimed at finding and punishing software pirates, Microsoft has started a different approach.
The effort is part of Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage program. Users have encountered this effort when attempting to download certain software from Microsoft's web site.
A user trying to obtain the company's new anti-spyware package have to go through a validation process. If they fail, they are presented with an opportunity to get the free licensed version.
Part of the offer requires the user to fill out a form, and send in their disk containing the operating system as well as a receipt for what they paid for the software.
If the user doesn't have the disk and/or the receipt, they receive an invitation to purchase a licensed copy for $149 USD.
The program aims at removing unlicensed copies of its software from circulation without punishing people who may have purchased the unlicensed copy unwittingly.
