Members of a global gang of software thieves find their efforts ending with court sentencing and jail terms.

They called themselves heroes of the common man, liberating pricey software from rich corporations and making it available for download.

Microsoft and many other companies were the targets of the DrinkorDie.com piracy ring, a global conspiracy of tech criminals. The acts of piracy may have cost the companies millions of dollars.

Their actions reportedly personally enraged Microsoft chairman Bill Gates, according to a Reuters report.

Authorities arrested 70 suspects in 12 countries. The ring allegedly used moles in many of the companies to help crack software protection schemes so the programs could be distributed.

In London, Alex Bell and Steven Dowd were sentenced to 2 ½ and 2 year jail terms after having been found guilty. Mark Vent pleaded guilty and received an 18-month jail sentence. Andrew Eardley's 18-month sentence was suspended.
